The philosophy of Aefauld Rod Co is unique, simple hearted, honest and faithful, and it is my hope that the bamboo fly rods I create reflect this. They are made to go out and enjoy fishing with, and should last many years with good care. Bamboo is well known for being a symbol of durability, longevity and resilience.
Aefauld Rods are all hand split, hand planed hexagonal Tonkin cane. Nodes are staggered Garrison style to provide somewhat uniform strength along the rod. Flaming varies between the rods, from none to chocolatey dark. Rods are finished with a hard, clear polyurethane finish.
Each rod is different and is built based upon the experience and learning from rods built before, and so rods with different components or finish may appear. All rods are the same price, unless you ask for something unique that costs me extra to build. All rods supplied in Aefauld custom rod sock. Aluminium tubes are available at extra cost.
Tapers are based on well known tapers designed by some of the great American makers of rods, and advice from Adrian Maroya, Freddie von Riebnitz and Sean McSharry (three fellows with a wealth of knowledge about and experience with bamboo rods and tapers who have been extraordinarily helpful to me in this venture). I may add or remove tapers over time if I find others I like to fish with more. Some examples and images of rods already made are shown below. See what is available in the Rods Available Now page.
The rods shown here are those that I like to use. If you prefer something different to what you see here, such as different handle shape, fancier stripping guide or different reel seat options, or even just different thread colours, let me know.
Payne 98 taper, 7 feet, two piece rod best suited to #4 DT line. Blonde cane, cigar grip. Lovely to fish dry flies on small to medium streams, and OK with a light weighted dropper if that is your preference. Smooth, light and soft to cast, but power to cast longer or into a breeze when needed and a nice progressive flex. The slightly slower action virtually ensures a relaxing day out on the stream.
Slightly modified Frances “Digger” DeGere Fast #4 taper. A 7 foot, two piece rod. This is the result of a bit of trial and error, with a very slight oversize compared to the original taper spec through the tip section above the ferrule adding a bit of spine and speed to this fantastic taper. This is now my son’s favourite rod. Casts a dry or dry – dropper rig on a #4 DT line or a #5 WF easily, or a light weighted nymph - indicator rig. The “fast” description is apt – this rod is great fun to fish with on small or medium streams and will best suit anglers who prefer the faster speed and recovery of carbon rods. Full wells handle, green wraps, no trim.
Built on a Farlow’s Elf taper and medium flamed to a fried chicken flavoured finish, this rod is for some more serious business. 6’10” long, two pieces with full wells handle. Best suited to a #6 WF line (although a #5 WF is good also) this is a mid-fast rod with more power. I fish this rod on larger rivers for larger fish, and happily cast heavy three fly rigs (where that is allowed) on 18’ leaders with it when needed.
A Payne 101 taper richly flamed to dark chocolate. 7’6” rod suited to a #5/6 line. Half wells handle. A classic all round mid-fast taper with enough power to take on bigger rivers but still sensitive and subtle enough for careful dry fly casting and close quarters fishing. A fantastic all round rod built on a taper that is famous for a reason.
